Theirs is a bright future…and the best is yet to come

“Our job is done,” said a delighted Rachel Owens, Headmistress of St George’s College after finding out that this year’s A Level results equal and in some cases beat last year’s record. “The students have worked hard and made the most of all the opportunities offered here, so I am confident they are not only the best version of themselves but are also absolutely ready for the opportunities they will be offered in the years ahead.
With over half (53%) of papers graded A*/A and 80% graded A*/B, there was a real buzz as students and their parents came back to school for a celebration Bucks Fizz breakfast. Among them were 40 students celebrating A*/A in every subject.
All the students already knew their results so the talk was of ‘where next?’ All those who applied for Oxbridge had their places confirmed, as did all those applying to read Medicine and the two who had been offered scholarships at American universities.
Dylan was excited to be heading to Exeter to read History alongside a large group of his friends. “Exeter was a very popular choice for many of us,” he said. “I’m ready to go there and do my best. Here at St George’s, I have loved my work and my rugby equally and it is thanks to the teachers here that I have learned how to manage my time. That’s going to be vital.”
Asked if she thought her time at St George’s had prepared her for the next step in her life, Abi, was emphatic: “One hundred percent! I have loved it here.” She achieved three A*s and is off to Birmingham to study Medicine.
Her friends Alaina and Lucy were quick to agree. “Your teachers here are not just teaching you; they care,” said Lucy. “They will push you if they think you can do better and reach higher.” Alaina added: “Mrs Owens has brought a modern vibrant atmosphere to the school, which is really refreshing and makes such a difference.”
They all agreed that nowhere could have prepared them better to take their next important steps into their future – their bright future. As one delighted parent said: “I have had a son at St George’s since Third Year and two daughters who joined in the Sixth Form. They have all done exceptionally well and they are a testament to the education provided here.”
The statistics for individual subjects speak for themselves in underlining our ‘Perfectly Balanced’ education: 21% of papers were graded A* compared to 18% in 2018. Eight subjects achieved this and more, including Art (40% A*), Spanish (56% A*) and Further Maths (89% A*). The A*/A statistics are equally strong, with Biology achieving 58% A*/A, Chemistry achieving 74% A*/A, Maths achieving 72% A*/A and History 45% A*/A. Four subjects, French, Further Maths, Latin and Drama, all achieved 100% A*/A.
Jon Carr, Head of Sixth Form, said: “It was a wonderful breakfast where teachers, parents and students were celebrated for all the support and work that each has put in to ensure this current year of leavers have achieved one goal and are ready to achieve the next.”
