SGC Maths Quest Easter Special 2018: SOLUTIONS

Well done to all of the children that took part in our special two-part Easter Maths Quest, there were many answers sent in, and here is a list of the winners who got the correct solutions:

Charlie H (Bishopsgate School)

Blake C (Bishopsgate School)

Archer W (Bishopsgate School)

James W (St George’s Junior School)

Here are the solutions to the latest Maths Quests:

Problem 1: A case of fractions

Solution: It was not possible to achieve exactly 1 from the given fractions, the closest you could achieve was 1 and 1/60. The easiest way to achieve this was to convert all fractions into equivalent fractions with a denominator of 600. Alternatively you could work with the fractions in decimal form, but 4/15 and 1/6 are recurring so this is a little messier!

Below is the original problem.

Problem 2: A game of multiples and factors for two players

Solution: The key to winning this game is to force your opponent to select 1, as you can then choose a prime number over 50. Since they have already chosen 1 and multiples of these primes will be greater than 100 they will lose. Since you started on an even number under 50, the best choice was 46, as this lead to a losing spiral of selections as quickly as possible using products of two primes.

Well done again to everyone that took part and keep an eye out for the final problem of this year’s Maths Quest series coming soon!
