More good news – St George’s College boys are Under 14 Surrey Hockey Champions

On 24 February 2015, the Under 14A boys’ hockey team at St George’s College, Weybridge successfully became the first 11-a-side boys’ team at the School to become champions of this notoriously challenging county championships in almost a decade.

Travelling to Charterhouse in good spirit and with an understanding of the tough matches that lay ahead, the first game against RGS would prove a stern test and the team did not disappoint.

With a last minute individual effort from Alex Harmes, St George’s deservedly came out on top in a nail-biting 2-1 victory. With the team already through to the South Regionals, only a strong Reeds team stood in the way of Surrey Cup honours. After a slow start by both teams, it was Reeds who took a 1-0 lead into the second half.

However, a rejuvenated St George’s team dominated the second half and, with flowing transfers of the ball to the wide players, the team found themselves thirty seconds away from a 2-1 victory before Reeds scored with the last play of the game.

With penalty strokes deciding the championship, it was the agile and superb reactions of goalkeeper, Lyle Reynolds, with six saves in sudden death to send the squad in ecstatic celebrations.

With the ever-inspirational Harry Wells leading the team in the centre of midfield, each individual fought for the honour of being crowned Surrey County Champions and will go into the Regional Cup knowing that they will need to replicate the same passion and dedication to progress to the Regional Finals.
