Lest We Forget concert
On Friday 26th September, both choirs of St George’s College joined together with Clari Cantus, an award-winning choir for Leuven, Belgium, to put on a concert in commemoration of the WWI anniversary and to mark the start of the College’s own celebrations. The concert opened with a poignant and mesmerising performance of Bruckner’s Locus Iste, performed by both Clari Cantus and our Chamber Choir. Following this, the choirs of St George’s College performed pieces including Stanford’s extended work For lo, I raise up, Bainton’s lyrical And I saw a new heaven, and the final two movements of Fauré’s Requiem in which Finn Mather gave a powerful and assured performance of the baritone solo in the Libera me.
Following this, Clari Cantus took to the stage to perform a selection of works by composers including John Tavener, Arvo Pärt and Morten Lauridsen. The Belgian choir gave a hypnotic performance of these pieces showing their vocal quality through a wide variety of dynamic and timbral contrasts.
At the end of the concert Miss Castledine, Director of Music at St George’s, thanked Clari Cantus for their singing and presented them with a college crest and teddy bear. Audience members were heard to describe the concert as ‘a fabulous evening’ and ‘a roller coaster of emotions’.2 October 2014
