Careers in Science and the Environment

Just over a week ago on 21 October, ten professionals spoke informally with 50 students in the Fifth and Sixth Form at St George’s College, Weybridge, about careers in Science and the Environment. The speakers were from a wide variety of professions and greatly impressed the students.

A leading urology surgeon spoke with exceptional concern to students about the challenges of incontinence, a topic that provoked many questions. Runnymede Borough Council was represented too, discussing land contamination and air pollution, which was not only vital to the students’ Geography exams but also showed them a superb potential careers path. Local Woking employer, Mustang Engineering, sent along an Old Georgian, who enthralled the present day students with information about oil rig design. Also attending was Andrew Stott from the Facilities department at St George’s Weybridge, who explained how St George’s Weybridge operates as sustainably as possible.

The event was organised by St George’s Development Department, which promotes the Georgian Family of past and present parents and Old Georgians. The Department works alongside the College’s Careers Department to help open students’ eyes to the world of work.

The next careers evening will be on Wednesday 10 December and will focus on 21st Century careers. Local employers interested in taking part in this evening are asked to email the Development Office at development@stgeorgesweybridge.com
