GCSE results 2018
St George’s students have broken the school’s record for GCSE results for a second year running – with 51% of all papers graded A* and over 75% graded A*-A. Fifteen students achieved straight A*s and 28 achieved at least 10 A*s. One student, Toby House, achieved an outstanding set of results of 12 A*s and 1 A grade.
“These are excellent, and well deserved, results,” said a delighted Francesca May, Deputy Head Academic. “It has been an odd year for both students and staff because they were dealing with two different grading systems.”
“About half our papers are IGCSEs so are still graded using the traditional letter system, while the other half are graded 9 to 1 and it was difficult to predict how the new grading system would work. In the end, it has worked out very well indeed!”
As with last week’s A Level results and in line with the ‘perfectly balanced’ heart of the school, a wide range of subjects produced over half of all papers graded A*, including Maths (66%), French (58%), Music (60%), Physics (62%), English Literature (56%) and Latin (78%). Further Maths, a subject that already has the equivalent of an A** grade, produced 69% of students achieving A**/A*.
The results for Resistant Materials, 35% A*/A (which is a significant increase on 2017), are perhaps those that staff and students will be celebrating the most. “The results are both poignant and pleasing, and a testament to the dedication and passion shown by former Head of Resistant Materials, Ivor Facey, who sadly passed away during the summer break,” explained Headmistress, Rachel Owens.
The Van Crombrugghe Scholarship is our highest academic accolade, awarded to students on entry to the First Year of the College. The recipient for this award in 2013 was Amelia Samuel, who throughout her time at St George’s, has continued to flourish and today has achieved straight A*/9 grades. Like so many other children, Amelia has been a member of our Georgian Family from a very early age and Antony Hudson, Headmaster of the Junior School, is understandably delighted by her achievements.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that Amelia has fulfilled her academic potential by gaining top grades in all her GCSEs this summer. Throughout her years in the Junior School where she started her Georgian journey, she loved to learn, as well as throwing herself into all other aspects of school life. Amelia’s academic success is huge testimony to her own hard work, as well as the countless teachers across both schools, encouraging her to do her very best. Many congratulations!”
