Upper Sixth student awarded placement at Dyson Institute of Technology
St George's College is delighted to announce that Upper Sixth student Freddie Garnham has been awarded a placement at Dyson Institute of Technology.
Freddie has written a short piece on how the opportunity came about and what he will be doing during the course of the placement.
"After completing one week’s work experience for the Defence Science Technology Laboratory and speaking to someone who was working for them as an EDT (Engineering Development Trust) YINI student (the Year in Industry), I decided that I wanted to follow a similar career path and not take the traditional path to university. Therefore, this year I started to apply to some engineering and technology companies in the hope that I could complete an internship after my A Levels.
With the help of EDT, I put together my CV which was then sent to the participating companies of my choice. EDT also recommend that you apply independently to some companies to increase the chance of an offer. Therefore, I decided to apply for the Dyson Institute of Technology (who will introduce its first cohort of approximately 30 students in September of this year).
The process for Dyson involved online tests, phone interviews and an assessment day. Recently, I received a call to say that I had been given a place on their four year course and I happily accepted. During this time, I will be gaining a BEng in Engineering (specialising in either mechanical or electronic engineering in my final two years) accredited by the University of Warwick. For the most part, I will be working for Dyson as an employee but, once a week, lecturers will come in and I will study for my degree. Dyson will be paying me as an employee and will also be paying for the tuition fees. I may also have the chance to visit Singapore or Malaysia during my final year.
Although many thought this was a no brainer, I was still worried about missing out on the ‘university life’ and sports. James Dyson has, however, thought of this and has built a purpose built sports hall and gym as well as designing the site into a university style campus. I will be starting the four year course on September 1."
Congratulations to Freddie on this fantastic next step in his education.14 July 2017
