Under 11A boys' hockey team reign supreme in IAPS Regional Tournament

On Tuesday 21 February, the Under 11A boys' hockey team travelled to Haileybury College to compete in the IAPS Regional Tournament.

Throughout the day, the boys played an attacking and free flowing brand of Hockey that is synonymous with teams from St George’s.  In the Group stages, they recorded excellent wins over Felsted (1-0); Haberdashers Aske (2-0); Beechborough (4-0); and a hard fought draw against Ashfold. This meant they advanced to the next stage as Group Winners.

In the next rounds, they continued to play with pace, flair and creativity, that their opponents simply could not contain. Two further wins over The Beacon (2-0) and Magdalen College (2-0) and a draw with St Faith's (0-0) secured a semi final place and qualification for the National Finals. However, this is a Tournament that St George's Junior School has won three times in the last four years, so the team was very motivated to continue this run of success.

In the semi final, they played their best hockey of the day in a 3-1 win over Alwickbury, which meant a meeting with St Faith's again in the Final. This was a game that St George's dominated from the start as St Faith’s struggled to play through the boys' well organised press. However, despite controlling territory and possession, the pupils were unable to break the deadlock, until Ollie P pounced on a loose ball in the circle and slotted home from close range with just under two minutes remaining.

It was a wonderful, triumphant victory for St George's and the boys, one that can be attributed to hard work, their best efforts and above all, great teamwork. Joe and Edward were rarely tested in goal, but did all that was required of them in the crucial moments. Ollie F, Peter and Josh worked tirelessly for the team and distributed the ball intelligently. Ollie P, Marley and Fin provided the flair and creativity in midfield. While Joe and Sam were sharp and clinical in front of goal. All of the boys can be extremely proud of the contributions they made to this tremendous success. Congratulations to everyone involved.
