Under 11 Southern Counties Hockey Association regional winners 2017

The Under 11 girls' hockey team from St George's Junior School, Weybridge has become IN2HOCKEY Regional Hockey Champions 2017.

Playing on 14 March 2017, the girls' performances continued to improve throughout the day, the flow and speed of the game striking for players of their age. It was a real squad performance with each and every player offering another threat for the team.

Group stages - here's how St George's Junior School performed:

Game One: The ball refused to cross the line for the girls in the first 13 minutes and we conceded via a short corner. Lost 1-0 v St Thomas’ Clapham in a well fought match.

Game Two: Won 1-0 v Highgate, a very well taken goal after some beautiful approach play down the right hand side.

Game Three: Won 2-0 v Portsmouth Grammar School, there was no stopping the girls now. Their play was fast and skilful.

Game Four: Won 4-0 v St Andrew’s Berkshire, could visibly see the girls love of hockey coming across in their play. They looked natural and found a way through any situation.

Game Five: Won 3-0 v Manor Prep, we had picked up a few injuries along the way but the strength of the squad meant that making substitutions was the right decision to ensure all were available later in the tournament.

Game Six: Won 4-0 v Burgess Hill, our set pieces and free play goals were unstoppable. The girls interlinked really well. An excellent team performance.

Semi final:

Won v St Andrew’s, Woking. We couldn’t find a goal within the game. So the outcome would be decided with a penalty flick competition at full time. After the toss up, we were second to go. The St Andrew’s player scored. On our turn to take the penalty, the St Andrew’s goalkeeper came off her line so there was a re-award. Our player had to hold her nerve to take it again and scored, 1-1. The next St Andrew’s player shot wide of the target and our player scored making it 2-1 to St George’s. If our goalkeeper made the next save we would be finalists. The St George’s goalkeeper got down brilliantly to make a stick save. We were through to the regional final!

Won 2-0 v St Thomas’ Clapham. A repeat of the first game of the day, our opponents would be St Thomas’ Clapham. The St George’s girls played with freedom and flare scoring two goals in under five minutes. Showing they were indeed the best Under 11 girls' hockey team in the South of England.
