St George's Gymnasts leap to success at National Gymnastics Competition
On Saturday 11 November, the Under 9, Under 10 and Under 11 girls' teams and the Under 9 boys' team travelled to Stamford Junior School to compete in the ISGA (Independent Schools' Gymnastics Association) National 2 Piece Gymnastics Competition.
Gymnastics Coach, Mrs Henderson, has written a short report on the day's action:
"The 2 pieces of apparatus that everyone competed on were a set floor routine and a voluntary vault. This was the first time St George’s had entered this competition, so we were unsure how competitive we would be, but I am pleased to say that all of the gymnasts performed beautifully on each piece of apparatus and the extra training they had been putting in on a Wednesday and Thursday morning clearly paid off!
When the results were announced everyone was so impressed with how well St George’s did. The Under 9 boys' squad finished 3rd overall in the team placings, with one pupil finishing in 6th place individually and another boy gaining an individual 2nd place finish, missing out on the top spot by an agonising 0.18 of a point!
The Under 9 girls' squad finished 2nd in the team placings, with one of the girls finishing 6th individually and one of St George's own taking the title in 1st place! She is now the Under 9 National Champion!
The Under 10 girls' squad also came 2nd in the team event. There was an individual 5th place finish and a 2nd place finish.
The Under 11 girls' squad was in a difficult group with gymnasts who train over 12 hours a week! They placed 8th overall, with one pupil finishing 7th individually and narrowly missing out on an individual medal.
The children were a credit to the school throughout the day, they behaved perfectly and performed admirably!
A big thank you to Mrs Waters and Mr Chester for assisting with transport and helping to prepare the children for the competition."
