Junior School sports stars enjoy winning start to the year

With the start of a new academic year, comes the start of a new sporting calendar, and at St George's Junior School, the young sports stars have started the year in unstoppable fashion.

Getting the ball rolling this year was the Under 10 Girls' Netball and Hockey teams.

Under 10 Girls' Netball Feltonfleet Tournament - Champions

On Saturday 16 September the Under 10A girls won the Feltonfleet netball tournament. The tournament was fiercely competitive and the girls from St George's showed their endurance and determination throughout the tournament, often chasing a deficit during the games. It was a fantastic start to the season for the girls.

Results:

v Hoebridge - Won 4-2

v Guildford High - Won 7-4

v Halstead - Drew 3-3

v Feltonfleet - Won 5-1

v The Study - Won 8-3

v Hawthorns - Won 5-2

Under 10A and Under 10B Girls' Hockey - St Teresa's Hockey Tournament

Then, on Saturday 23 September, the Under 10A and Under 10B Girls' Hockey squads went to St Teresa’s inaugural hockey tournament. Four of the girls from St George’s Under 10 hockey squad were excused to attend the second round of the Surrey cricket trials, a great achievement to be selected through to this stage.

Both St George’s teams played fast attacking hockey creating many opportunities to score in the 10 minute matches.

The Under 10B squad played magnificently well and finished as tournament winners. Netball Coach, Ms Mogford, gave a brief report of the girls' victory:

"Our first game was against Hawthorns School, where Kitty scored the winning goal, and also a second in the next game against Danes Hill, to draw 1-1. Lola was the next to show her attacking skills, scoring 3 goals in the following game against St Teresa’s. The defence was particularly good all day, and our fabulous goal keeper, Amelie, impressively only let one goal in all morning.

The final game against Manor House was the one we needed to win to be crowned champions, and while we were not able to score, resulting in a 0-0 draw, the play was at its peak for the day. The girls were tired but fearlessly launched themselves in front of shots, moved excellently around their defenders, and passed incredibly accurately all game. As luck would have it, Manor House and Danes Hill also drew 0-0 and we won the tournament on goal difference. I was so proud of the teams work rate last weekend, the teamwork was fantastic and I can’t wait to see how strong and cohesive their tactical play will be by the end of the year."

The Under 10A results were:

v Downsend - Won 1-0

v St Teresa’s - Won 1-0

V Danes Hill - Drew 0-0

They finished runners up in the tournament on goal difference.

Finally, the Under 10 Girls' Hockey squads travelled to Millfield Prep School on Saturday 20 September for another tournament.

Despite the long trip the girls were raring to go and demonstrated brilliant passing and movement through space. Their defence was excellent all day. The Under 10A team must be commended for not conceding all afternoon across 5 matches. It was a great experience for the girls to play different opposition and they really did light up the tournament with some passages of play.

Under 10B team won the tournament:

v Millfield School - Won 4-0

v Redmaids' High School - Won 4-0

v The Downs School - Won 3-1

The Under 10A results were:

v Sherborne School - Won 2-0

v Redmaids' High School - Won 2-0

v Perrott Hill - Won 2-0

v The Downs School - Won 2-0
