1st XV magnificent as they become U18 Schools Bowl champions
St George’s Weybridge 1st XV rugby squad were crowned Under 18 Schools Bowl Champions in March after claiming a magnificent and dominant 36-10 victory over Samuel Whitbread Academy. The win was the culmination of seven hard-fought matches against the likes of ACS Cobham (61-7) and Reigate Grammar (39-0).
In only the second ever Schools Bowl Final, St George's outstanding performances were definitely worthy of the school that produced Bath and England’s Anthony Watson and the Wasps player and Rio Olympic silver medallist Marcus Watson.
Rachel Owens, Headmistress at the College, was delighted with the result, saying: “Our boys have played brilliantly throughout the competition, in the end, they deserved to win. They were really well prepared both physically and mentally – and proved excellent ambassadors for St George’s.”
Samuel Whitbread Academy were strong opponents, having had some resounding wins, including an impressive 67-0 against Ashville College – no small feat in a Quarter Final match. On the day, though, it was St George’s who dominated the match, at one point leading 31-0 before Samuel Whitbread’s resolute play brought them two late tries.
Rachel went on to say: “We are proud of our sporting reputation but also proud of the fact that our top sportsmen and women are really well rounded.
“You will find that each of these players will be involved in other key parts of the school, whether as debaters, artists, actors, mathematicians, members of the choir or any one of the many other opportunities open to our students – in other words perfectly balanced!”
Well done to all of the boys that took part and to the coaching staff as well for preparing the students so well.
